What is Nostr?
Nostr is a simple, open protocol for identity and content that no company controls. On TimechainWiki it's one of two ways to sync your highlights and notes across your devices.
The idea
Nostr stands for "Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays." Your identity is a key — a public key (your npub) that others see, and a secret key (your nsec) that only you hold. There's no account to sign up for and no company that owns it.
Apps read and write your data to relays — servers anyone can run — so the same identity works across every Nostr app you ever use. Switch apps and you keep your identity, your follows, and your content.
How it works here
When you sign in and highlight a passage, it's published as a small Nostr event — a standard highlight — to relays, under your key. Open TimechainWiki on another device, sign in, and they read back onto the page. Because relays are public, treat these highlights as public. We store nothing ourselves.
Get set up
- Pick a signer that holds your key for you: on Android, Amber; on a computer, the Alby or nos2x browser extension.
- Open it and let it create a key. Back up your secret (nsec) somewhere safe — it's the only way back into your identity.
- Come back here, click Sign in, and under Nostr choose Browser extension (on a computer) or Amber / remote signer (on your phone — in Amber tap Connect, copy the
bunker://link, and paste it). - Approve — your highlights now sync.
Your secret key is your account. A signer app keeps it safe and approves logins for you, so you never paste your secret into a website — including this one.
